THE CHAKRA SERIES: A STUDY OF LIGHT

My paintings in this exhibition were initially influenced by the sudden life-threatening illness of a friend. More aware then of my own aging process, I began to create work that was related to the idea of fragility.

My process is intuitive and involves finding a balance between the spontaneous and the deliberate. I work in oil and cold wax medium on canvas and on panel. The cold wax medium adds a measure of transparency to the oil and makes the surface more matte. My paintings evolved into rectangles of colour, laid down in multiple, thin, translucent layers resembling panes of glass. In each of the seven paintings I focused on one of the Chakra colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and white. In the metaphysical traditions of Hinduism and Buddhism, the seven Chakras are the centres of life force or vital energy in the body, which govern our psychological properties. The chakras on the lower part of our body are our instinctual side, the highest ones our mental side. When they are ‘open’, they are considered operative in a normal fashion. The ideal state is where the chakras are balanced—our instincts work together with our feelings and thinking.

I used the concept of the Chakras to denote the the human body—the strong, clear colours describing the lively energy of those centres. Painted in thin, transparent layers that overlap each other, the paintings appear to shimmer as though to express vitality, but with the fragile appearance of panes of glass. In these seven paintings my goal has been to explore in a personal way, the fine balance between health and illness; courage and fear; strength and fragility.

As this series continues to evolve, it is moving beyond the personal, and beyond the physical dimension of paint and colour, into a study of light.

Jan’s Chakra paintings The Fragile Series, were selected for a special exhibition at the new hospital opening in December 2015 in Oakville, Ontario. They hold a special place in a hallway outside the emergency department. The new hospital was designed with 250 places specifically for art work in addition to the usual places in the offices, treatment rooms and patient rooms. We are actively soliciting donations to purchase the entire Chakra series so that it can stay in the hospital’s permanent collection. One painting has already been donated. If you are interested in contributing, please contact us or call 1-866-844-4481

Here is a view of the series now installed at the hospital.
