In today’s world, the eyes and the soul are assaulted by a myriad of things, causing us to lose our focus, become scattered, and even blinded to the simple beauty around us. Peter Dusek’s toned black and white photographs give us a glimpse of this hidden beauty; a beauty hidden like a special shell amongst the pebbles on a beach. Inspired by the simplicity of the Japanese philosophy of Zen and the moderation of the Chinese idea of the Tao, Peter places a strong emphasis on balance and negative space. His artistic design goal is “as little as possible, as much as necessary”, giving an abstract quality to his intimate landscapes.

Drawing from Peter’s work from the Georgian Bay, Muskoka, and central regions of Ontario, Serenity distills the essence of the Canadian landscape, reducing the vastness of the land to an intimate approachability. Peter’s artistic style embodies the Japanese design aesthetics of shibumi, which means “a quiet elegance”, and yūgen, “profound grace and subtlety”. The end result is a series of contemplative photographs, each of which depicts a purity that is ever-present, and yet often overlooked.

A successful work of art is about evoking emotion. A room full of Serenity takes on a life of its own and one cannot help but feel they have stepped into a world outside of time, with an instant sense of calm and slowness felt upon entering.

As a critic has noted, “The simplicity of the work is misleading and therein lies the skill of a fine balance achieved.” In this simplicity can be found the serenity and perhaps even the happiness that often eludes us.

Peter blends his Slovak heritage, where he was born and lived until coming to Canada at age 7, with his love of Canadian landscapes, nature and philosophy. He translates this background to his love of photography with a detail and precision that brings a truly unique quality to his photographs.

Peter’s images are in small editions, available in four sizes: 8 x 8 in., (20 x 20 cm), 20 x 20 in., (51 x 51 cm), 36 x 36 in., (91 x 91 cm) and 48 x 48 in., (122 x 122 cm)

and can be custom sized.

OTHER WORKS

Peter Dusek is a Canadian photographer who is inspired by the simplicity of Zen and whose desire is to instill a feeling of serenity in the mind of the viewer. He places a strong emphasis on balance and negative space and his artistic design goal is “as little as possible, as much as necessary.”

Great photography is the rare marriage of the creativity of art with the technique of craft and the precision of science. If any one of these elements is missing, a photograph falls short of its full potential. Peter’s photography benefits from over 20 years’ experience as a computer consultant and programmer, building sophisticated database systems, which requires a similar blend of creativity, craft, and extreme attention to detail.

Peter was born in Slovakia and moved to Canada when he was 7 years old. He lives in the beautiful Hockley Valley with his wife, dog, and cat, exploring the local countryside by motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot, often accompanied by his dog, Daisy. His constant excursions give him a deep familiarity and affinity with some of ON’s most beautiful lands.

Peter’s works have been exhibited at the Abbozzo Gallery in Toronto as well as in numerous juried and non-juried art exhibitions, including the Elora Arts Council’s Insights Juried Art Exhibition, the Headwaters Arts Festival, the Headwaters Arts Gallery at the Alton Mill Arts Centre, the University of Guelph Desmond Art Show, Beaux-Arts Brampton, and The French Press. He received the first place Juror’s Choice award at the “Awakenings” show in 2014.

Peter’s work has been used on corporate, business, charity, political, and federal government websites, advertisements, electronic tourism boards, business brochures, sell sheets, and has been in Air Canada’s EnRoute magazine, In The Hills magazine, In The Kingsway magazine, Toronto.com, 365Etobicoke.com, ONFestivalsVisited.com as well as on Global TV news. His fine art landscape work has also been shown in various galleries, juried and non-juried art shows, The French Press, Hockley Valley’s Black Birch Restaurant, and the Dufferin Veterinary Hospital.

Peter is a proud member of the Rotary Club of Etobicoke, the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), the Town of Mono Heritage Advisory Committee, Headwaters Arts, the Orangeville Art Group executive, and the Headwaters Photographic Society executive.
