Getting personal on the blog – Alex Colville
From time to time, one of us writes personally on this blog. This time it is Margaret. In other words, comments here do not necessarily reflect what’s going on in the gallery! More on that later.
So on a personal note, I have loved Alex Colville’s work for a long time so I am really looking forward to the exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario which takes place from August 23, 2014 – January 4, 2015. I saw the small exhibition at the National Gallery some 10 or so years ago and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. This new exhibition comprises 100 works so it will be one not to be missed.
There is a very interesting review today in The Toronto Star by their art critic Murray Whyte. You can read it here. He wonders if the AGO tries to explain Colville a little too much, and thereby removes some of the magic of his work – that ability to imply or suggest emotion or narrative. It is a valid complaint and one can argue for both sides of the issue however, it won’t prevent those of us who love the work from the opportunity to see so many of Colville’s wonderful images.
If you attend the exhibition, send us an email and let us know your impressions.
