As I continued working on the 'cup' project,
I realized that what I was doing was 'deconstruction' of the
cup. Deconstruction is a term used in
Semiotics: application of the science of
signs. My background is language studies and linguistics,
and the communication process in spoken or written language
as well as in visual art form always fascinates me. The idea
behind deconstruction, according to Jacques Derrida, is that
meaning is not tied to a particular sign and is not fixed
within closed systems. It moves continually on a chain of
signifiers. Deconstruction challenges the unqualified
present. Thus in my 'cups of deconstruction' I am
celebrating dissemination over truth, explosion and
fragmentation over unity and coherence, undecidable spaces
over prudent closures, playfulness and hysteria over care
and rationality. |
