Join us on Thursday June 5th, from 6 - 7:30 PM, for an evening of conversation with photographers Sylvia Galbraith and Steve Kean, whose exhibitions What Time Is This Place? and Moving Landscapes II, are currently on view as part of the 2025 CONTACT Photography Festival.
Through distinctive lens-based practices, both artists explore rural geographies – Galbraith in Newfoundland’s outport communities, and Kean across the varied landscapes of rural Canada. Galbraith’s work is grounded in her time in the East Coast, where she employed historical camera techniques in outport buildings to examine themes of belonging, displacement, and transformation – deeply rooted in the cultural context of these communities. Kean’s photographs, captured in motion, reflect on perception and our relationship to the land. Taken along Canada’s highways, these images reveal how movement shapes what we see – and how we connect to the landscapes we pass through.
Moderated by Blake Zigrossi, Associate Director at Abbozzo Gallery, this conversation will offer insights into each artist’s creative process, and the ways they interpret time, place, and memory through photography.
This event is free and open to all. RSVP is appreciated as there is limited space.
