  • Antidotes for Yearning examines our natural inclination as human beings to grow attached to moments in time all the while knowing the futility of doing so when faced against the relentless force of time, deeming all ephemeral. In this body of work, Pope challenges the traditional portrayal of the female figure, focusing on her own relationship with the absurdity placed upon standards and the play-pretend inherent to female representation, encouraging the viewer to consider how they adorn their own existence: whether through beauty, longing, or acceptance.

    Emily Pope (b. 1993, Canada) is a painter living and working in Toronto, Canada. Her work explores the interaction of figure with symbolic elements and settings to amplify her experiences of womanhood. Pope's recurring use of symbolism and still life serve as visual anchors, working on themes of longing, identity, and transformation through the emotional landscapes she traverses, aiming to provide a glimpse into the intangible experiences of existing, presenting an inward life of daydreams on canvas.
