• Exhibition Statement

The images in this exhibition reflect on the energy states of the landscape: from serene to highly kinetic. Taken over the course of the artist's multiple transits on Canada’s highways and byways, these images were all created by harnessing his movement through the land on trains and buses. Intended to portray the ethereal feeling of being in-between dream states of not-quite-asleep-not-quite awake, Kean's images blur reality just enough to allow us to contemplate our place within nature. The exhibition posits a question about our place in a fast-paced world and how we experience the land. It challenges us to reflect on our increasingly tenuous relationship to our natural environment, our one and only home.

I am an artist working in photography. Most of my work involves images made in the ever-shrinking green places and spaces between and inside cities.

The profound beauty of nature has always moved me. I grew up surrounded by plants, trees and animals and was taught from an early age to respect them. Having a disability that requires me to use a wheelchair has often made it difficult to interact with nature. But I have found ways. Most notably traveling through it on trains and automobiles.

My work that as a whole I call, "Moving Landscapes" is inspired by a diverse group of artists. Photographers like Peter Dusek, Ansel Adams, Ed Burtynsky and Freeman Patterson. I also find myself drawn to gifted painters including Mark Rothko; John Constable; Claude Monet; Vincent Van Gogh; Paul Cezanne; Georgia O'Keefe; Canadian painters the Group of Seven, especially honourary member, Tom Thompson; Steve Driscoll and artists of the Hudson River School.

In 2017, I received the Best in Photography and Digital Media award at the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair, and I am honoured to have my photographs hanging in corporate collections and private homes.
