Abbozzo Gallery is pleased to announce our participation in Art Toronto 2025, where we will be presenting a focused selection of works by Naoko Matsubara.
  • It’s the most wonderful time of the year – art fair season is in full bloom, filling Toronto with energy, collectors, and conversation. We’re thrilled to exhibit at Art Toronto for its 25th edition, presenting work by the extraordinary Naoko Matsubara.

Our booth features a selection of Matsubara’s bold, expressive woodcut prints, including works available from her landmark solo exhibition, Naoko Matsubara, currently on view at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Presented concurrently, these two exhibitions offer audiences a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of her seven-decade career and her enduring mastery of colour, rhythm, and form – where each piece speaks to a lifetime devoted to the art of printmaking.

Visit us at Art Toronto 2025, Main Program, Booth A67, to experience works from Naoko Matsubara’s acclaimed In Praise of Hands, In Praise of Trees, and Arctic Twilight series, and join us in celebrating one of Canada’s most distinguished printmakers.

Abbozzo Gallery has had the honour of working with Naoko Matsubara since our founding in 1993, and is proud to serve as her exclusive commercial representative.

Born in 1937 on Shikoku Island and raised in a Shinto Shrine in Kyoto, Matsubara trained at the Kyoto Academy of Fine Art before completing her MFA at Carnegie Mellon University as a Fulbright Scholar. Her practice evolved through formative periods in London, New York, and Cambridge, before she settled in Oakville, Ontario in 1972. Over the course of her career, she has exhibited widely across North America, Europe, and Asia. Matsubara's work is held in the permanent collections of over 40 major institutions including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the British Museum, the Ashmolean Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, LACMA, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Royal Ontario Museum. She is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts.
