The uninhabited landscape is a key facet of Canadian identity, and it is becoming a prominent symbol for the global environmental movement. Our growing awareness that the human species faces hard limits to its growth and consumption makes Nickerson’s detailed paintings of tree trunks, roots and leaves poignant reminders of the fragility of life.
